Be-Mobile, a European mobility technology provider, has delivered a new dynamic parking guidance system for the city of Beringen in Belgium. Five digital signs along the city's main approach roads display the live availability of four central city parkings, helping drivers find a free space directly and reducing the search traffic that adds to congestion and emissions in the city centre.

Live capacity for four city parkings

The new system covers the four main public parkings in the centre of Beringen. Real-time occupancy data from the parkings, operated by Indigo, is converted by Be-Mobile software into clear visual information that is shown on five LED signs positioned along the approach roads to the city.

Drivers entering Beringen can see at a glance which parkings still have free spaces and choose their destination before they reach the centre. This shortens the time spent looking for a space and reduces unnecessary driving through the city.

Less search traffic, more liveable streets

Search traffic — drivers circling streets in search of a free parking space — is a known contributor to congestion, noise and emissions in city centres. By guiding drivers directly to parkings with available capacity, the system supports a more efficient use of existing infrastructure and a calmer experience for residents and visitors.

For the city of Beringen, the project is part of a broader effort to make the centre more accessible and liveable while supporting local trade.

Be-Mobile delivered the parking guidance system together with two specialised partners. Equans was responsible for the on-site installation of the signs along the approach roads. Q-lite supplied the LED displays used for the dynamic signs.

Be-Mobile provides the software platform that collects the real-time occupancy data from the parkings and translates it into the information shown on the signs.

With this dynamic parking guidance, we want to make our city centre more accessible and more liveable. Drivers find a free space faster, which reduces unnecessary traffic in our streets.

    Why this matters

    • Live parking occupancy was shown on approach-road signs before drivers reached the centre, allowing them to choose a car park with available capacity.
    • The system targeted search traffic, which the article identifies as a contributor to congestion, noise and emissions in city centres.
    • By directing drivers to available spaces, Beringen aimed to use existing parking infrastructure more efficiently and improve accessibility and liveability.
