Driving Safer, Smarter, and Smoother in Flanders
Sharing mobility data is key to making your driving experience safer, smoother, and more enjoyable. Be-Mobile processes mobility data on behalf of the Mobilidata program to offer you more personalized traffic alerts and guide you through intelligent intersections more efficiently.
But Mobilidata is not just about providing these services, it is also about improving them. By analysing data from road users, the programme can examine questions such as:
- Are road users receiving timely and accurate warnings about hazardous situations on their route?
- Can intelligent traffic lights be optimised to better manage traffic during rush hour?
- How can emergency services reach accident victims faster?
How Data Is Used
Mobilidata uses two key sources of information to evaluate and enhance its services.
Location and speed data
GPS data from selected locations and time periods is analysed to assess specific traffic solutions. The locations and timeframes are kept as limited as possible while remaining relevant to the evaluation.
Examples from the legacy story include:
Traffic jam alerts: evaluating whether accurate tail-end traffic-jam warnings support safer driving behaviour.
Intelligent traffic lights: evaluating whether road users receive green more efficiently at a selected intersection during the morning rush and how green and red times may be further optimised.
User feedback
People who have registered with an app, service provider or car brand may be invited to complete a short survey about their experience of the service.
The surveys may ask when road users want, or do not want, to receive warnings about dangerous situations, why they want or do not want to receive those warnings, and which notifications they find most useful.

Figures are based on a blind A/B test and a morning monitoring window (07:00–13:00) across Flanders; they illustrate observed impact, not a permanent daily average.
How Your Data Is Protected
The legacy story states that protecting road-user data is a priority.
Data anonymisation
Shared data is divided into parts. Information that could directly identify a person is removed after researchers compare behaviour with and without warnings. The process can take up to eight weeks.
Limited retention
The remaining data is used to learn how services can be improved with as little data as possible and how less data can be collected for this purpose. Aggregated data may be retained for specific research and service evaluation for a maximum of five years.
