HOW ELECTRONIC TOLLING WORKS
Different roads need different ways to charge
Electronic tolling is not one single model. A truck travelling across a national road network is charged differently from a car passing through a toll tunnel or crossing a tolled bridge. Depending on the road, vehicle and tolling setup, road use can be registered and processed through GNSS, ANPR or DSRC.

HOW ROAD USE IS REGISTERED AND PROCESSED
GNSS
Uses vehicle positions to reconstruct the driven route across a road network. Accurate map matching determines which road segments were actually used and therefore which toll applies.
ANPR
Uses cameras to recognise licence plates when vehicles pass defined tolling points such as bridges, tunnels or motorway sections. The passage can then be linked to the relevant toll domain and service provider.
DSRC
Uses short-range communication between roadside equipment and an onboard unit as the vehicle passes a tolling point.
