Recently, the city of Beringen began using its brand-new parking guidance system. The system ensures less search traffic in the city and smoother communication to travelers. For this, Beringen collaborated with Ghent smart mobility service provider Be-Mobile, which developed the software, and Equans, multi-technology expert specializing in mobility solutions, which took care of the installation of the entire system. The dynamic LED signs displaying the parking information were supplied by Q-lite.

It is important for the city to inform its visitors efficiently and correctly about the available parking spaces in the parking garage and direct them to the various parking options in the downtown area. This results in less search traffic and an optimal distribution of visitors among the available parking lots. By directing traffic faster to its destination, the city becomes greener and safer.

Beringen has one relatively new underground parking garage under the city hall. There, directing visitors is done using real-time data on current parking occupancy. This data is measured by the parking company Indigo after which Be-Mobile converts it into relevant information and visualizes it on the digital signs along the road. There are a total of five digital signs in Beringen. One in the Graaf van Loonstraat, at the entrance to the underground Parking Stadhuis, and four along the main approach roads Paalsesteenweg, Hasseltsesteenweg, Koerselsesteenweg and the Koolmijnlaan.

Alderman for Mobility and Traffic Jean Vanhees sees great added value in the parking guidance system: "We want visitors and residents to be able to reach our city easily, but also to limit the number of parked vehicles in the center by allowing visitors to park in the peripheral and underground parking lots. A good parking system is an important part of this. This emphasizes more the residential function of the center and makes it more pleasant to be in the center. Thanks to the info signs, we can communicate quickly, efficiently, and clearly about the parking possibilities in our city. This is a great added value within our mobility plan."
